Riverdale seems to be veering ever closer to the supernatural with its upcoming second season.

A brand new trailer tips a tense atmosphere hanging over the dysfunctional town following the shooting of Fred Andrews, with Archie arming himself for revenge. Watch the trailer below:

There also seem to be some strange happenings of the demonic variety. Although its source material, Archie Comics, has featured all variety of paranormal phenomenon (from zombies to a well-known teenage witch), the CW series has kept its story away from the metaphysical thus far.

But that looks to be changing - at least according to a tweet from showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa alluding to someone or something known as the Sugar Man playing a role in the second season.

Some fans are speculating that this Sugar Man might be based on the Slenderman mythos, but a Reddit search turns up an actual result for Sugar Man submitted by one user (via i09).

This user, who goes by chokingmn, relayed a story told by his grandfather: "[Sugar Man has] got a bulbous little body, short and fat, almost round, with a sharp nose better at smelling than a dog.

"He follows that nose through the snow, but he gets cold and needs the warmth of the houses. He slips into them easier than a mouse, he's done it for so long that he doesn't even need to think how anymore. His tongue is long, longer than a dog or a snake and it's sharp, flicking out, looking for the sugar. Whatever the Sugar Man actually is."

Whoever or whatever the Sugar Man actually is, it clearly means trouble for Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) and her late brother Trevor Stines - who actually own a dog named Sugarplum in the comics.

If Sugarplum has gone to the darkside or if the Sugar Man is some sort of creature, it opens the door for Riverdale to move in a supernatural direction.

When Digital Spy recently caught up with KJ Apa (aka Archie), he seemed unconvinced that the show was willing to introduce characters like Sabrina the Teenage Witch just yet.

Riverdale returns on Wednesday, October 11 on The CW in the US, with each new episode debuting on Netflix in the UK soon after.
