Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix have reportedly welcomed a baby boy
Rooney Mara and fiancé Joaquin Phoenix have welcomed their first child together, a baby boy who they have named after Joaquin's late brother, River Phoenix.
The notoriously private couple have yet to confirm the happy news, which was revealed by Russian director Victor Kossakovsky at The 2020 Zurich Film Festival on Sunday 27th. Following the screening of Gunda, a documentary which Phoenix executive produced, Kossakovsky addressed the Joker actor's absence from the panel during a Q&A, saying, "He just got a baby, by the way, his name was… a beautiful son called River, so he cannot promote it now."
The couple's first baby has reportedly been named after Joaquin's older brother, River, who died of a drug overdose at the age of 23 in 1993. River was famous for roles in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, My Own Private Idaho and Running on Empty.
Joaquin and Rooney are both very private about their personal lives and their relationship, with a source revealing the pregnancy news to Us Weekly back in May of this year, saying, "Rooney is about six months along," the source said. "Joaquin is great and has been accompanying her to appointments."
The couple met on the set of Mary Magdalene and started dating shortly after. Phoenix has spoken about how he initially thought Mara didn't like him while the pair were shooting the film, but later discovered she was just shy and liked him too.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Phoenix explained, "She's the only girl I ever looked up on the internet... We were just friends, email friends. I'd never done that. Never looked up a girl online."
The couple kept their relationship private for months before making their couples debut on the red carpet of The Cannes Film Festival in May 2017. News of an engagement first broke in May 2019, after Rooney was seen out shopping while wearing a large diamond ring on her left ring finger.
