The Princess of Wales kicked off the birthday celebrations for her husband, Prince William, by releasing a fun new family photo.

William, who turns 42 today, smiles wide in the unconventional birthday portrait, shared to Kensington Palace’s social media channels on his big day. Kate captured the photo during a family outing in Norfolk last month.

Kate left a sweet message for her husband in the caption, signing off the note in her typical fashion with a 'C' for Catherine: “Happy birthday Papa, we all love you so much! Cx.”

The photo shows William, clad in a navy blue hoodie and salmon shorts, holding hands with Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six, as they joyously jump off a sand dune on the beach. Louis also holds the hand of his older brother, 10-year-old Prince George, who triumphantly waves his hand at the camera as the family of four leaps through the air.

The Wales children were dressed casually, with Charlotte in a striped sweater and floral shorts. Her two brothers co-ordinated in blue, with George in a dark T-shirt and shorts and Louis in a light blue gradient tee and navy shorts.

Kate also took another beach portrait, which was released to celebrate Father’s Day last weekend. Released a day after the princess made her first public appearance since her cancer diagnosis, that photo captured a tender moment between William and his children. In it, William stands tall looking at the ocean, while his three children huddle close together near him.

The Princess of Wales opened up this spring about leaning on her husband amid her preventative chemotherapy.

“Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance,” the royal said in a March video that announced her diagnosis. “As is the love, support, and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both.”

She added, “We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space, and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I’m able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.”
