Royals 'not a very loving family': Diana told George Michael

As her lengthy divorce proceedings with Prince Charles were being finalised, Princess Diana confided in British singer George Michael over her pain and heartache.

George – who had become close to the Princess after meeting backstage at a concert in 1989 – called Diana on her birthday in 1996 when they started chatting about her divorce.

Confiding in her friend, Diana is ehard saying in newy emerged tapes: “It’s been pretty grim, but we’re near the end of it.”

George then asked her if she thinks that she will “get what she has asked for”, with Diana replying: “I’m going to get three quarters of what I want and the quarter you can’t have, so there you go.

“Not a very loving, compassionate family, this one I’m leaving, I tell you," she adds, referring to the royals.

The pair then shared jokes about an Elton John documentary that George had appeared in, with the friends quipping about how extravagant Sir Elton’s life is and Diana comparing the music icon to Imelda Marcos.

According to The Sun, the phone conversation was recorded by George’s answering machine and the singer then gave the tape to his friend, Andros Georgiou, who was with George when the conversation took place.

The recorded conversation ends with George telling Diana that he would “love to see” her, with Diana replying that she’d prefer to “wait until things quieten down”.

Speaking of George and Diana’s “honest” friendship, George’s childhood friend Andros said: “On his third visit to Kensington Palace, they drank a bottle of wine together and George was so drunk she offered him a room for the night.”

Princess Diana sadly passed away in August 1997, with George being found dead in his bed on Christmas Day, 2016.
