What was Ryan Routh, accused of trying to assassinate Trump, up to in Ukraine?

Fifty-eight-year-old Ryan Routh, accused of attempting to assassinate former US president Donald Trump on September 15, made at least one trip to Ukraine back in 2022. Even though it is still unclear what he was doing there, there is information showing that he was trying to recruit foreign volunteers for the Ukrainian Army, mostly using websites he made himself. Later, he seems to have also tried to recruit people to go to Taiwan. The Ukrainian Army, however, claims that they never cooperated with Routh.

A few years back, Ryan Routh posted a photo of himself on Facebook. In it, he is wearing a bulletproof vest and posing in front of a backdrop that prominently features the Ukrainian flag. His account has since been deleted, but a number of social media users archived it before it was wiped from the internet.

The 58-year-old, who is thought to have planned an armed ambush of Donald Trump on his golf course in West Palm Beach on September 15, 2024, regularly posted on social media about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. An archived version of his X account (which has since also been deleted), shows that he regularly called on public figures and decision-makers to support the Ukrainian armed forces.

According to his posts on X, it appears that Routh went to Ukraine in April 2022 with the aim of “fighting”.

The academic said that responses like this made him lose interest in Routh. He had also heard that there was no real basis to his activities.
