Second police officer investigated over Manchester Airport kick video

A second police officer is being criminally investigated for assault over an incident at Manchester Airport last month.

It comes after a video showed a man being kicked and stamped on by an officer on 23 July.

The footage led to an angry response, with around 200 protesters gathering outside Rochdale Police Station, and some shouting "shame on you!" at the police.

Three days later, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) watchdog said an officer was being criminally investigated.

It said today a second officer was being investigated after Greater Manchester Police (GMP) referred a complaint from one of the people involved.

The officer is also being investigated for potential gross misconduct - including over the use of force, the IOPC added.

The IOPC probe does not automatically mean criminal charges or misconduct proceedings will follow.

Police are separately investigating if any criminal offences were committed by the members of the public involved, with four men still on bail after being arrested.

GMP said three officers were assaulted at the airport, including a female constable who was left with a broken nose after being punched.

The IOPC said it would look into the force used by officers against two men and a woman - part of an initial incident near the car park machines at the airport - during which the two men were arrested.

It's also investigating force used on three others in an incident shortly afterwards, when two men were arrested and one of them was pepper sprayed.

The watchdog said it would assess whether actions were in line with police policies and procedures, and whether "discriminatory behaviour" was a factor.

IOPC regional director Catherine Bates said the incident was "complex and escalated rapidly" and they are "working hard to piece together all of the relevant events".

Family members of those involved have been briefed on the investigation and Ms Bates called for anyone with any relevant information or video to get in contact.

It comes two days after a lawyer representing those involved said all footage of the incident should be retained.

Solicitor Aamer Anwar said an "incomplete series of events" had been portrayed and the family had suffered "horrific racist and Islamophobic abuse on social media".

Mr Anwar provided the family's version of events.

He said it grew from an incident on a flight from Pakistan when Shameem Akhtar was racially abused by a man on board.

She broke down in tears when greeted by her sons at Manchester, with the men confronting the alleged culprit near a Starbucks in the airport and an "altercation" took place.

The solicitor said the family left and headed towards the car park, where Mr Amaaz was approached by three police officers.

He said the footage seen in the media "does not show exactly what the police did, how the incident began or the full conduct of officers in the aftermath of the incident, including after the arrest".

In a statement on Thursday, GMP said it was making "good progress" in investigating alleged offences by both the public and its officers.

The force called it a "complex case" and said it was fully committed to supporting the IOPC's investigation.

It said it had received lots of queries and messages about the officers' welfare, which have been passed on to them, adding they were being "well supported".
