Shocking dashcam emerges as truckie charged with hitting teens
The 60-year-old truckie has been charged with two counts of causing injury by dangerous driving.
The shocking moment a truck driver allegedly ran a red light before crashing into two teenagers as they crossed a busy intersection has been caught on dashcam footage.
The students were heading to Marryatville High School in Adelaide around 8am on Wednesday morning when the horror unfolded, leaving a 16-year-old boy in critical condition and a 16-year-old girl with serious injuries, South Australia Police said.
A third teen who was able to pull back at the last minute is reportedly recovering at home.
The dashcam footage shows a group of students waiting on the side of Kensington Road as the traffic light appears to turn red and cars come to a stop. Seconds later, the truck driver allegedly entered the pedestrian crossing as distressed witnesses watched on.
Additional video shows numerous paramedics and police at the scene, with one online post claiming five ambulances, five police cars and two fire trucks were involved.
“I heard what I thought was a rubbish bin being hit,” one witness told 7News, while another emotional man said the community was “stunned”.
Crash a 'tragedy for everbody'
The 60-year-old truck driver, who was unhurt, was arrested and charged with two counts of causing injury by dangerous driving following the crash, police said.
Superintendent Narelle Kameniar said investigations were at an early stage and there were a number of witness statements to be taken. “It looks like the students were crossing at the pedestrian crossing and the truck may have gone through a red light,” she said at a press conference on Wednesday morning.

Supt Kameniar said a number of other children were in the area at the time and school officials were assisting them. “It is a tragedy for everybody who witnessed this,” she said. “My heart goes out to the families of these two children and the school that they're from. It’s obviously very distressing for them.”
