With the return of the scrunchie, flared pants, and turtlenecks, ‘90s fashion is enjoying an extended comeback. During a royal outing with Prince Harry at a radio station, Meghan Markle rocked flared trousers, after all. And recently, Kim Kardashian was seen wearing teeny tiny, ’90s sunglasses to channel her inner Keanu from The Matrix.
In an episode of E!’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim revealed that husband Kanye is actually behind her retro look, saying:
“Kanye picked it out. He sent me like a whole email like, ‘You cannot wear big glasses anymore. It’s all about tiny little glasses. He sent me like, millions of ’90s photos with tiny little glasses like this.”
Kim has spoken about Kanye throwing out her entire “cheesy” wardrobe in an interview with LOVE magazine in the past, so West’s involvement in her accessorizing comes as no surprise. Fans of the E! series will also remember the 2012 Keeping Up with the Kardashians episode where the Yeezy designer raids his then-girlfriend’s closet with his stylist. In the clip, Kim says: “Kanye has definitely inspired me to be a little bit more of an individual [and] I think my style’s evolving and changing.” Judging from the pink dress Kim’s wearing in the 2012 clip, the beauty mogul’s drastic style evolution is evident as she opts for neutral hues these days.
In light of ‘90s fashion making a comeback (and, of course, Kim’s email from Kanye), we’ve compiled a shopping guide for tiny sunglasses even Kanye would approve of. Seriously, these are the lewks ‘90s fashion icons like Cher Horowitz of Clueless or Denise Huxtable of The Cosby Show would so be rocking in their era.
