Sky One's cop thriller Bulletproof has been renewed for a second series.

The first run has only just finished, but another six-part outing has already been greenlit for 2019.

Sky has said that the show's first episode attracted 1.59 million viewers in total – the biggest audience Sky One has had so far this year.

Noel Clarke and Ashley Walters – who star alongside each other – write the show, and Clarke said earlier in the year that he hoped Bulletproof would become a franchise.

"This is a culturally significant and ground-breaking show in many ways, and we appreciate the record views and support along the way," he said of the renewal news.

"We made this show for people we feel are underrepresented so they could be entertained, which they were, and they came out in droves to watch. Thank you to all who tuned in and see you for series two."

Back in May, the pair told Digital Spy that the show was inspired by the Bad Boys franchise, but that they never thought such a TV show would be possible "because it has two black leads".

"I grew up on Bad Boys, and I've always wondered why I could never see any cop shows like that on TV over here, with the kind of people that I can relate to," Walters said. "So it was us filling a gap... A canyon-wide gap in the market."

Bulletproof airs on Tuesdays at 9pm on Sky One.
