Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello: a timeline of their relationship

It's been six years since Modern Family's Sofia Vergara met Magic Mike's Joe Manganiello and one of the most beautiful couples of all time came to be. The story of the whirlwind romance is pretty cute too. He called her his 'celebrity crush' in an interview, by the end of the year they were engaged and a year later they were married. Since then it's been nothing but beautiful hair and Instagram PDAs.

Here's everything we know about their relationship, starting with the most recent update.

June 2020

Sofia and Joe celebrate the sixth anniversary of their first date in true 'Verganiello' (doesn't quite work, does it?) fashion - meaning it involved some very romantic Spanish phrases and some very loved-up Instagram posts.

She posts a picture of the two of them cuddled up together alongside the caption, "6 yrs since u went and found me!!! happy aniversary @joemanganiello. U r mine!!!! [sic]" Plus another picture of them at a very lavish looking dinner date in their house (it's still quarantine after all).

Meanwhile, he posts an anniversary tribute in Spanish which translates into "to the woman of my dreams". Plus a picture of a cosy looking outside seating area at a restaurant. Could this be where their first date took place?

It's all just very romantic.

May 2014

Sofia and Joe met at the White House Correspondent's Dinner in May 2014. She was still with her ex-fiancé Nick Loeb at the time, but it looked like Manganiello had eyes for her even then, as he was snapped in quite the revealing picture on the night.

Manganiello has since spoken about the picture in an interview with E! News in August 2014, saying, "Yeah, I totally got busted," he said. "That was actually funny when we first started dating, months after that."

He also spoke about the night they met, saying, "We had talked I guess, or kind of bumped into each other, but we didn't start dating until she was single. I mean, she had a boyfriend at that time, so I probably could have got in a fight for doing that. I'm not trying to start a fight at the White House."

Not long after the White House Correspondent's Dinner Sofia called off her engagement to businessman Loeb (although there's nothing to suggest that this was due to Manganiello), and after hearing that Vergara was single Manganiello asked her Modern Family co-star, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (he plays Mitchell Pritchett on the show), for her number.

June 2014

Weeks after the pair first meet Vergara and Manganiello secretly go on their first date, after he got her phone number from Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

In an interview with Haute Living in 2015 Manganiello described their first date, saying that with Vergara fresh out of a relationship she had her guard up.

"Our first date was her giving me every reason why it would never work out," Manganiello said. "Like, 'You're too young, you're an actor, you're this, you're that,' and she was just doing it to hear herself say it. She was trying to talk herself out of going there."

July 2014

Rumours begin that the pair are dating after the pair were seen out together holding hands while on a trip to Miami, and they don't do anything to hide the relationship with numerous candid photos surfacing showing the pair kissing.

August 2014

In an interview with Extra Vergara confirms the relationship. Speaking about it for the first time she says, "You know I'm just having a great time and it's a special time in my life and I'm trying not to think too much about it. It’s something very new so we will see what happens."

It also turns out that the couple's trip to Miami was so that Vergara could introduce her new boyfriend to her family. When asked if her mum approves of her new relationship Vergara says, "What is there not to approve of?"

November 2014

The news breaks that the couple moved in together just after Thanksgiving. During a later interview on Ellen, Degeneres brings up the fact that she is their new neighbour and actually spotted the couple moving in.

"I left him home packing my things," Vergara told Ellen. "We’ve had help, and he’s doing his stuff. He has a lot of books that I don’t know where I’m going to put. We have a wine cellar and I was like, 'oh, maybe that’s where we should put them instead of wine.' He doesn’t want to put them in storage!"

December 2014

Manganiello and Vergara get engaged on Christmas Eve during a trip to Hawaii, and he even proposed in Spanish. During an interview with Haute Living in 2015 Manganiello described the proposal.

"We had this big bay window [that I opened] and the sun was going down pink over the mountains and over the bay, and I had this ring," he said. "I had looked at every ring in the world, and this is the ring that I wanted. I had a whole speech prepared in Spanish. I proposed to her on one knee in Spanish with the sun going down. It was awesome."

November 2015

11 months after the engagement , the couple marry in an in-cred-ible wedding at The Breakers, a very glamorous resort in Palm Beach.

The huge fairytale wedding was attended by around 400 people, after the couple initially planned a small intimate ceremony. The guest list included co-stars from both stars most famous shows, Modern Family and True Blood.

Plus Pitbull also showed up to give a surprise performance for the couple.

December 2015

After the extravagant wedding, the couple head to the Parrot Cay Resort in Turks and Caicos for an equally extravagant honeymoon. The area is favoured by celebrities like Bruce Willis and Keith Richards, and you can understand why, it's a 1,000 acre private island with three miles of tranquil beaches, an infinity pool and spa. Sounds alright I guess...

November 2019

The couple celebrate their anniversary with loved-up throwback to their wedding on Instagram.
