We never thought it would happen, but The Emoji Movie thespian Sir Patrick Stewart is reprising his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and it's not for a crummy videogame tie-in!

The best (don't @ us) Starfleet captain is returning for his own series on CBS All Access in the US and Netflix worldwide, which is where Star Trek: Discovery is shown.

But if you're afraid of this new series jumping on Discovery's critically acclaimed bandwagon, then don't worry. The people behind the show told Digital Spy and other press at New York Comic Con that it's going to be completely its own thing.

"We pick up Picard 20 years after (The Next Generation)," said executive producer Alex Kurtzman.

Fellow exec Heather Kadin added: "The Picard show shouldn't feel anything like Discovery. It's not going to look like Discovery, it's not going to have the same values.

"We want every show to feel unique so that you're not just signing up for an experience and you get the same one every time."

Although critically acclaimed, some fans aren't so enamoured with Discovery's glossiness, blue-hued colour scheme and focus on action that almost went into JJ Abrams territory.

A crossover has already been ruled out, while Marina Sirtis, who played Deanna Troi back in the day, said that the rest of the Next Generation cast have not been asked to appear in the new series.
