Sunrise star in tears after Kochie’s ‘weird’ joke live on-air: ‘I’m sorry’

Sunrise star Edwina Bartholomew was in tears of laughter after the breakfast show’s co-host David ‘Kochie’ Koch made a bizarre comment live on-air.

Alongside Natalie Barr, the 65-year-old spoke with The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart during Thursday morning’s show and made an awkward joke about his blue-spotted white shirt.

“Loving your Powerball shirt, you’d fit right in going up the chute,” Kochie commented.

“Sorry Kochie told you you should go up the chute, that was a bit weird,” Nat later told Matt, who quipped: “It’s not the first time someone’s told me that”.

The exchange was met with a fit of giggles from the team, especially Edwina who quickly began to tear up as she laughed.

“I had a late night last night,” she explained. “Stop talking about Matt’s balls going up the chute.”

Nat ended up wrapping up the segment, telling Kochie once again that his joke didn’t come across very well.

“It’s just a bit weird that you told him about going up the chute,” she said.

The hilarious moment comes shortly after the Sunrise hosts were left baffled after learning that ‘strollout’ was named Australia’s Word of the Year for 2021.

The term, which was selected by the Australian National Dictionary Centre, is defined as “the slow implementation of the COVID-19 vaccination program in Australia”.

“I talk a lot, we talk for three and three-quarter hours here. I don’t think I have ever used the word 'strollout' or heard it,” Kochie remarked. “So how did it go around the world as distinctly Australian when Australians haven’t heard of it?”

Edwina admitted that she also hadn’t heard of ‘strollout’ until she read the news story, and sports presenter Mark Beretta joked that “no one knows this word”.

“I’ve heard it,” Nat replied. “It was definitely used when we weren't getting as many vaccines out. I’ve never said it but it was definitely used.”

Wrapping up the segment, Kochie decided to set a challenge for himself and his colleagues for the rest of the day.

“One of us will use the word ‘strollout’ in some context every half an hour,” he declared.
