Sunrise's Edwina Batholomew on what prompted her pregnancy test

Sunrise newsreader Edwina Bartholomew has revealed how the process of booking her Covid-19 vaccine prompted her to do a pregnancy test and discover she was expecting.

The 38-year-old announced live on-air back in August that she and her husband, Neil Varcoe would be welcoming their second child in the new year.

Sunrise star's surprise

A few days later, Edwina took to Instagram to document her first Pfizer jab, saying that it took her 'ages' to find an appointment.

But it turns out that filling out the online application for the vaccine — specifically the standard question about whether she might be pregnant — was a watershed moment for her.

"I thought… you know? I've been feeling really tired and not great. So, maybe? So I took a pregnancy test and it revealed that I was," she told New Idea.

"It was a bit unplanned, but also great timing," she added.

Hitting back

Eddy's decision to get vaccinated while pregnant and share the news on social media caused a bit of a stir, with influencers trolling her for her choice.

She hit back at the criticism in a segment on Sunrise the following day, calling for pregnant women to listen to their midwife or obstetrician instead of Instagram influencers.

Just days after that, the Sunrise team experienced a Covid scare when a crew member at the Martin Place, Sydney studio tested positive for the virus. Eddy was deemed a 'close contact' and isolated at home for 14 days as a precaution.

Taking to Instagram at the time, she said she was 'very grateful' to be partially vaccinated and that the crew member was double vaccinated and asymptomatic.

"I have returned a negative test result and will continue to get tested," she wrote before adding that any anti-vaxx comments would be deleted immediately.

Eddy's baby news

Edwina shared the happy news that she is expecting her second child, a little brother or sister for 20—month-old Molly, on Sunrise on August 19.

"In developing news, news that will be developing news, news that will be developing for the next six months, we will be having another baby," she said with a grin.

"Due in January, and I tried to tell Molly and she was not terribly interested. I showed her the photo when she scrunched up and threw on the floor."

Edwina said she and her husband have decided to keep the sex of the baby a surprise.

"Yes, we know what it is. I will keep that one a secret for now," she said.

In 2019, when Edwina fell pregnant with her daughter, Molly, she told WHO magazine that it didn't happen straight away and took about six months.

“For many years, as a woman, you try so hard to not get pregnant,” she said.

“When you finally get to trying to get pregnant, there’s all these logistics you have to work out, like timing and it’s only really two, three days a month [you can fall pregnant]. It completely sapped the romance out of getting pregnant. But you know, I’m 35 – time’s ticking!”

She said that due to eagle-eyed viewers and her 'carb bloating', she needed to tell everyone bang on the 12-week mark.
