Sunrise's Kochie sledged over 'inflated' pay packet live on air

Sunrise co-host David ‘Kochie’ Koch was taken aback on Thursday morning when a guest on the breakfast show ‘sledged’ him about his ‘inflated’ salary.

Speaking to Carsales Editor-in-Chief Mike Sinclair, the hosts were discussing the best mid-size SUVs for the year before the quip came.

The Kia Sportage has been named Carsales’ best mid-size SUV for the year, and Sinclair was showing off the vehicles when the quip happened.

When asking Sinclair how much one of these vehicles would cost, his response was unexpected: “The Sportage range starts just under $40,000 and this one, which is the top of the range called the GT line, this one is I think about $53,000.”

“So Kochie, I think somebody of your abilities, with your inflated pay packet, I’m sure you could afford it,” he joked.

The shocked breakfast host took a moment before hitting back: “Oh, okay mate. I prefer the MG actually, that’s way better value.”

Kochie’s colleagues Natalie Barr and Mark Beretta couldn’t hold back their laughter, and Kochie wanted to defend himself.

“What? He was sledging me, so I’m going to sledge him back! He started it,” he announced.

The Sunrise host hadn’t finished there, telling Sinclair he wouldn’t be invited back on the show in the future.

“All right mate, not sure we’ll be having you back,” he joked, before saying he wasn’t serious.

“No, just joking, just joking. Gee, people have some nerve haven’t they?”

It made for a light-hearted segment, with Natalie praising Sinclair for the quip.
