Sunrise's Nat Barr shuts down correct way to pronounce IKEA: 'Won't catch on'

It seems Sunrise host Natalie Barr isn't going to be persuaded from her way of pronouncing the word Ikea, after it was this week revealed that many of us have apparently been pronouncing the name wrong this whole time.

The common pronunciation Australians and Americans have been using for the Swedish furniture giant ‘eye-key-uh’, is actually incorrect, with the right way to say the name actually being 'EE-key-uh'.

Explained the revelation on Sunrise on Wednesday, Newsreader Edwina Bartholomew said: "Swedish is a pretty difficulty language, so it’s really up to you if you stick with eye-kee-ah."

And host Nat Barr wasn't convinced.

"I don’t think it’s going to catch on," she said.

Sports presenter Mark Beretta described the revelation as a "real controversy", while co-host David ‘Kochie’ Koch said he would try to adopt 'ee-kay-uh' as he’s "a real stickler for pronunciation".

Twitter users went nuts over the discovery after YouTuber Mac Does kicked off the online conversation on Monday, tweeting: “So IKEA is pronounced like (EE-key-uh) not (EYE-key-uh) and no one was gonna tell me?”

“I refuse to acknowledge this,” one person wrote, while another added, “I don’t believe that actually”.

“I’m just gonna delete this tweet from my EYEs,” a third said, followed by someone else with, “It’s a company, I’ll pronounce it however I damn well feel like pronouncing it”

Others, particularly those who live in Europe, were more surprised that people didn’t already know how to say ‘IKEA’.

“I mean, all of us in the scandi-region already knew this,” a user replied.

“The entire non-English speaking world pronounces this non-English name like that,” another wrote.
