Spanish pop star Joana Sainz has died in a freak on-stage fireworks accident during at a fiesta in Spain.

The 30-year-old was mid-performance with the group Super Hollywood Orchestra on Saturday night, when a pyrotechnic device exploded at a festival in Las Berlanas, the New York Post reports.

The shocking accident occurred in front of 1,000 spectators who were watching the performance, and was also captured on camera, with the footage circulating on Twitter after the show.

An investigation into the cause of the accident has now been launched, according to The Sun.

After the incident, Isidro Lopez, from the group’s promotional agency Prones 1SL, said the same cartridges had been part of the group's show for the past five or six years and that they had used more than 2,000 cartridges in its previous performances without any issues.

“The whole Prones family, partners, artists, friends, collaborators are very sad and dismayed by the loss of our companion and friend Joana Sainz, dancer and choreographer of the Super Hollywood Orchestra,” the promoter wrote on Facebook.

“We sincerely appreciate all the love we are receiving in these hard moments.”

Joana was the pop group's principal dancer and choreographer, according to local news outlets. In total, the group has 15 members, including singers, musicians and dancers.
