Tenants saved by 'miracle decision' as ute crashes into living room
The impact of the vehicle sent debris flying everywhere, destroying the front of the Queensland home.
A last-minute decision to head out for dinner has potentially saved the lives of three men who returned home to see a ute had crashed through their home.
The Queensland residents said they're often sitting in the living room at the front of their rental property near Logan, but on Monday night an out-of-control vehicle ploughed through the wall where they would have been.
The driver of the ute was allegedly speeding down Aquarius Drive in Kingston south of Brisbane before it smashed into the brick home, 7 News reported. The collision took out the front wall of the house sending bricks and glass flying across the property.
The television was also shattered by the impact and the sofa was reportedly pushed to the other side of the room. Thankfully no one was home at the time.
"We usually sit and eat and do everything (in) this lounge. It’s a miracle, actually," residents Steve Jordan and Allah Yousseff told 7 News. "Lucky we weren’t here at the time — otherwise we’d be killed right now."
Driver and passengers flee on foot
Neighbours said the driver of the vehicle attempted to reverse back out of the rubble but when that failed, he allegedly fled on foot along with two other passengers. Queensland Police caught up to the driver near the back of the property. He was reportedly arrested and transported to hospital.
Visiting the scene, homeowner Zaynab Rilsila said "it's a shock" to see the damage caused to her property, which she only renovated last year. She estimates the damage to be "at least $30,000.
Other neighbours recalled the loud noise they heard from the crash.
"You knew immediately that someone had a major crash," one said. "You knew it would be serious from this kind of sound. I can’t describe it."
