Tiger Woods withdraws from PGA Championship

After three days in which his score and his pain grew progressively worse, Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the PGA Championship.

Woods began the tournament Thursday with an early charge that put him within a stroke of the lead. That hot streak soon faded. Friday was a battle just to make the cut, and Saturday was a debacle — a nine-over round that left Woods +12 for the week and in obvious pain.

"I didn't do anything right," Woods said after the round. "I didn't hit many good shots. Consequently I ended up with a pretty high score."

Woods declined to speak further with media after the round, relaying short quotes through a pool reporter and leaving open the question of whether he would continue playing this weekend.

Via statement, PGA of America president Jim Richerson announced that Woods was withdrawing from the major.

Woods continues his recovery from a single-car rollover crash in February 2021 that nearly cost him his right leg or, worse, his life. He played all four days at Augusta National for the Masters, growing weaker by the day, but the cooler temperatures at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this week caused him even more significant problems.
