Today host Karl Stefanovic takes aim at Madonna: ‘Lost the plot’

Today host Karl Stefanovic has shared his brutally honest opinion on pop icon Madonna and her choice of clothing, saying that she’s “completely lost the plot”.

The Like A Prayer hitmaker was first mentioned during Brooke Boney’s entertainment wrap up on Monday morning when discussing new details about her upcoming biopic.

Madonna recently spoke to the Associated Press about the film, which is still in the early stages of planning, and revealed that she’d love for Florence Pugh to star.

“She's definitely up there on the list, if she'll have me,” she said about the Little Women actress.

After Brooke relayed the story on Today, adding that she thinks Florence would be “great as a young Madonna”, Karl gave a rather harsh critique of the 63-year-old superstar.

“Madonna has completely lost the plot, hasn’t she?” he said to his fellow panellists, to which Brooke replied, “no comment”.

Karl continued sharing his thoughts, adding with a laugh: “I mean, did you see her outfit the other day?”

“None of us are wearing eye patches, are we?” Brooke said, referencing Madonna’s iconic look in 2019 to promote her Madame X album.

“Well, I was on on the weekend! Argh!” Karl quipped while pretending to be a pirate.

Co-host Allison Langdon wrapped up the conversation, saying that Madonna is “quirky” and “it takes all types”.

Madonna has become well-known throughout her career for her head-turning fashion, which hasn’t slowed down with age.

Most recently, she sported an edgy outfit with long braids, sunglasses and a necklace reading ‘trust no b***h’ on the red carpet for the premiere of her Madame X concert film.

Karl’s comments about Madonna’s clothing comes shortly after he and Allison wore the same attire three days in a row to help raise funds and awareness for homelessness.

The outfit repeating incident was very similar to Karl’s 2014 ‘experiment’, which saw him wear the same suit every day for an entire year without anyone noticing in order to highlight the double standards placed on him and his then co-host, Lisa Wilkinson.

“Women are judged much more harshly and keenly for what they do, what they say and what they wear,” he said at the time.

“I'm judged on my interviews, my appalling sense of humour – on how I do my job, basically. Whereas women are quite often judged on what they're wearing or how their hair is... That's [what I wanted to test].”
