Today's Birthday, November 10: Ricki-Lee Coulter, Australian singer, songwriter and radio presenter, (1985 - ).

The booting of Ricki-Lee Coulter from Australian Idol may have been described as a scandal but over the years she has earned her stripes in showbusiness with several albums and other media roles.

Coulter was born in Auckland, New Zealand, but was raised on Queensland's Gold Coast. Growing up Coulter had an active school life full of sport but recalls a lonely childhood while her mum worked two jobs to pay the bills.

In 2003 Coulter tried both Australian Idol and Popstars Live but failed to make it through to the finals. Returning to Idol in 2004 she blitzed it right through to the top 12. Established as a favourite to win, her shock exit at 7th place was described by judge Ian "Dicko" Dickson as a scandal.

Soon after Coulter was reportedly offered multiple record contracts but signed with independent label Shock Records.

She struck gold with the first two solo singles from her 2005 debut album Ricki-Lee, Hell No! and Sunshine.

In 2006 Coulter joined up with three other former Australian Idol contestants for a national tour under the group name Young Divas. But in 2007 the group line-up reshuffled when Coulter departed to refocus on her solo career.

That year Coulter went on to release her most successful single, Can't Touch It, from her second album Brand New Day and also won Fave Female Singer at the Nickelodeon Australian Kids' Choice Awards.

Over the next few years Coulter tried her hand at various gigs including breakfast host for Sydney's Nova 96.9 in 2010, as a mentor on The Voice Australia with Seal in 2012, a 3rd-placed contestant on Dancing with the Stars in 2014, and this year as a television host for Life Changing Adventures.

Taking a hiatus from music in 2010 Coulter said she felt burnt out and was struggling to find motivation in her music. Between 2015-2016 she relocated to Los Angeles to focus on writing music and in September 2017 released the single Not Too Late, which peaked at 83 on the ARIA charts.
