WATCH: Warbird plane makes 'belly flop' landing at Auckland airport

A single-engine warbird has made a belly flop landing at Ardmore Airport, south of Auckland, after emergency services were put on alert.

The one person on board the Trojan has got out of the plane and firefighters have left the scene, a Fire Service spokeswoman said.

The plane was in a holding pattern on Wednesday, burning off fuel, before making a final approach at 2.34pm and landing without its landing gear.

The Fire Service was alerted two hours earlier and sent three appliances and a tanker to the airport.

The T-28 Trojan is a trainer aircraft which was used by the United States Air Force and United States Navy from the 1950s.
