Police divers have recovered the body of a man who disappeared while swimming in Lake Karapiro, near Cambridge.

The body was found on Monday after the man got into trouble in the lake on Sunday.

"Formal identification of the deceased and notification of next of kin is taking place, and as such police will not be releasing a name at this time," police said in a statement.

The victim was a 21-year-old engineering student from Malaysia and they had gone for a swim while cycling the Hamilton River Trail, his flatmate told Fairfax.

Meanwhile, another swimmer is missing after they got into difficulty while swimming at west Auckland's Muriwai beach.

Two people had got into trouble on Sunday evening, sparking a search and rescue effort involving a helicopter.

One man was recovered and taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The search for his companion was stood down in fading light and resumed on Monday morning.
