NZer missing after rogue wave hits in Bali

The New Zealand man missing in Bali was trying to rescue his girlfriend who was hit by a rogue wave while taking a selfie on the edge of a cliff.

Temson Mannie Junior Simeki, his girlfriend and another person were taking photos at the Angel Billabong tourist spot when the wave hit on Monday morning, according to local police.

His girlfriend, 20-year-old German national, Leonie Alanise Hafke, was knocked into the sea and the 23-year-old Aucklander jumped in to save her.

However, he went missing and she was rescued by an Australian snorkeller.

The search for the New Zealander was called off on afternoon and will resume on Tuesday morning, says Nusa Penida precinct police chief Ketut Suastika.

The other woman. from Jakarta, who was with the couple suffered a head wound and was in Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta is following up with local police.

It was providing consular assistance to the victim's family, a spokeswoman said.
