'He is so close': Residents want 'sex witch' pedophile turfed out of Melbourne suburb

Frightened Cheltenham residents are campaigning for a notorious "sex witch" pedophile to be forced out of their suburb after 7 News revealed he was living near a local primary school.

The investigation has led the state opposition to push for possible changes to the law.

A trio of detectives paid a visit to Robin Fletcher on Tuesday in response to community fears about the arrival of an unwanted neighbour.

Staff at a local childcare centre have been provided images of the notorious pedophile.

Spokeswoman for the Friendship Square Child Care Centre Melissa Cause said it was necessary to make them aware of possible dangers.

"It's more about making the staff more aware, for example, they know who he is and what he looks like," Ms Cause told 7 News.

Ms Cause said the centre has also made contact with police and provided advice to parents.

"They're concerned about the safety of their children because he is so close."

Hundreds have given their support to an online petition calling for Fletcher to be forced out of Cheltenham.

But the 60-year-old shows no signs of moving on from his new home.

The sex offender remains at a property just 100 meters from Cheltenham's Le Page Primary School.

Victorian senator Derryn Hinch said the man should not be living so close to children.

"The man should not be there he should not be living anywhere near a school – primary school, kindergarten, secondary school – should not be," he said.

Dubbed a "sex witch", Fletcher moved into the boarding house shortly after being released from a supervision order.

He had been under supervision for 10 years after serving an eight-year jail term.

In 1998 he was sentenced for raping, enslaving and prostituting two teenage girls.

One of the major worries when it comes to Robin Fletcher's freedom is his access to a computer and the internet.

But to this point there have been no matters that have required police intervention.

The lack of control over Fletcher has led to calls from the state opposition leader for the location of sex offenders to be made public.

"I think Victorians are looking for something that is different, that is stronger, that gives a greater sense of security and safety so it is something I am actively looking at," Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said.
