A Labour frontbencher has hit back at criticism of her choice of outfit after it went viral over claims it was not “appropriate attire” for the House of Commons.

Shadow culture secretary Tracy Brabin wore an off-the-shoulder dress during a debate in parliament on Tuesday.

The Batley and Spen MP, who was elected to the former seat of murdered MP Jo Cox in 2016, was criticised by a Twitter user who posted a picture of her wearing the outfit asking: "Is this really appropriate attire for parliament?"

Brabin replied to the tweet: "Sorry I don't have time to reply to all of you commenting on this but I can confirm I'm not….

"A slag, Hungover, A tart, About to breastfeed, A slapper, Drunk, Just been banged over a wheelie bin.

Reaction to the outfit was mixed, with some people agreeing with the criticism while others took to Twitter to support her.

Brabin, a former actress who appeared in shows including Coronation Street, The Ghost Hunter and EastEnders, wore the outfit while raising a point of order on Downing Street's decision to order senior journalists from some major news organisations to leave before a briefing on Boris Johnson's Brexit plans.

Downing Street defended attempts to control access to press briefings, describing it as "entirely standard practice".
