Tua Tagovailoa not worried about trade speculation: 'I don’t even know when the trade deadline is'

·2-min read

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has shown improvement during his second season in the NFL, but he still can't escape trade talk. Tagovailoa's name has come up in speculation multiple times, often for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Those reports have only increased as the NFL trade deadline approaches.

If Tagovailoa is worried, he's not letting people know about it. Tagovailoa brushed off the trade chatter Wednesday, saying he doesn't "know when the trade deadline is," according to the Sun Sentinel.

In case you — or Tagovailoa — were curious, the NFL trade deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.

It's possible Tagovailoa already knows that, and is trying to play it cool before that date passes. It would be tough for Tagovailoa to be completely unaware of the situation given how often he has been mentioned in trades.

Will the Dolphins actually trade Tua Tagovailoa?

Reports indicate the Dolphins are willing to move on, but that would be a quick turnaround for a team that believed Tagovailoa was worth a first-round draft pick a year ago. Tagovailoa hasn't emerged as an immediate star in his 14 games, but he hasn't looked like a bust either.

There's evidence Tagovailoa has improved in Year 2. Despite missing time due to a rib injury, Tagovailoa has a 69.5 completion percentage, a 5.9 percent touchdown rate and a 7.1 yards per pass attempt. All three of those figures are improvements over what Tagovailoa showed last season.

Tagovailoa's growth hasn't resulted in wins. After winning 10 games last season, the Dolphins sit at 1-6 after seven games. That says less about Tagovailoa and more about the team's defense. The Dolphins have given up 207 points on the season, the second-highest total in the NFL through Week 7.
