Turns out flat shoes can be worse for your feet than heels

Turns out that’s not exactly the case.

Don't think that just because your shoe is flat that it's better for you.

One of the most walkable, flattest shoes around is just as bad as super-high heels: ballet flats. Unlike heels, which put all the pressure on the balls of your feet, flats add extra pressure to your heel, without any arch support.

In addition, “a heel will lead to stress on the outside of the knee,” Miguel Cunha, DPM tells The Huffington Post, whereas “a flat will lead to stress on the inside of the knee.” Just great.

Then they went and ranked your fave shoe styles in order of how good they are for your feet and we did not expect it to come down like this.

After stilettos with heels higher than two inches (according to Dr. Cunha, but even a 2.5-inch heel will severely disrupt your centre of gravity), the next style to be named and shamed was your go-to: thongs.

Apparently this Aussie summer staple is actually destroying your feet as they lack support and “force your toes to curl in order to hold onto the flimsy piece of rubber.”

This activity could lead to issues like hammertoes. Ick.

Third in the rankings are our beloved ballet flats.

Thanks to the multiple ankle straps on gladiator sandals, these summer shoes are slightly better for your feet than things - even when they're flat. Add a sturdy 1.5-inch heel, and you get a little more support with the style.

So what shoes should we actually wear?

Unsurprisingly ‘good sneakers’ are at the top of the list, followed by wedges.

Last, but not least, is a classic pair of chunky heels with a heel less than two inches high – which basically means we are all set for winter in our low-rise boots.
