Boxing fans have been left fuming as Tyson Fury won a nervous and controversial split decision over Francis Ngannou in his first ever professional heavyweight boxing bout. Ngannou, making his move from Mixed Martial Arts to boxing for the first time, humbled Fury having knocked down the undefeated boxing champion in a stunning turn of events.
Fans were out of their seat in round 3 as Fury looked dazed and out of sorts as Ngannou 'shimmied' over the champion on the ground. Fury bounced back and won a couple of rounds as it appeared Ngannou was starting to fatigue.
However, Ngannou rallied and took it to Fury in the latter rounds as he bossed the champion around the ring. Fury appeared frightened of Ngannou's famed power and the final two rounds went off without a bang.
Ngannou was clearly confident in the victory as he produced a 'Superman punch' in the squared circle. And Fury looked nervous after the bout as the duo waited for the judges scorecards.
One judge gave Ngannou the bout 95-94. But the other two judges scored it in favour of Fury 96-93 and 95-94. Fans were quick to jump on social media to express their frustration with the scorecards with the 96-93 score appearing to anger fans who momentarily believed Ngannou had recorded the biggest upset in boxing history.

Watching from ringside I thought Ngannou won the fight. It was close but he was the aggressor, landed heavier shots & scored a knockdown. Fury deserved to lose after having so much trouble against a man who has never boxed before… too much time filming Netflix specials not…

The look on Tyson Fury’s face is the look of a man who knows he has been weighed, has been measured and he was defeated.

Fury is expected to take on Oleksander Usyk in a bout in eight weeks for all the heavyweight belts. Ngannou could be expected to stay in boxing now where he can chase other big paydays against top opposition after a brutal performance against the undefeated Fury.
Tyson Fury praises Francis Ngannou after bout
After the controversial decision, Fury admitted he was rusty in the ring, but Ngannou surprised him with his skills. He also brushed off the talks of the knockdown and claimed he was fine.
"It's part of boxing," Fury said after the fight. “I got caught behind the head again. My legs weren’t hurt or nothing. I was alright. And I got back up and it was what it was. And I got back to my boxing. I don’t know how close it was. But I got the win, and that’s what it is.
“I had been out of the ring for a long time again. 11 months in between my last fights. You can see it in here, ring rust and everything. So, no excuses. Francis is a good fighter and he got me with some good punches. Fair play to him. It was a good, rough fight.”
