Several Ukrainian National Guard troops captured by the Russians have been found dead with their hands tied behind their backs in the Tokmak sector of the front, Ukrainian blogger and volunteer Serhiy Sternenko wrote on his Telegram channel on Oct. 30.

"These are terrible pictures. And the world should see them. Russians have shot Ukrainian prisoners," Sternenko said.

"We can see that the soldiers' hands were tied behind their backs and then they were killed. Judging by their chevrons, they were national guardsmen."

Mese, speaking at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, said that his team had gathered additional evidence of the systematic and widespread use of torture by the Russian armed forces in the areas under their control.

"In some cases, torture was used with such brutality that it caused the death of the victim," he said.

In early September, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said that some 90% of Ukrainian POWs had been tortured, raped, threatened with sexual violence, or otherwise ill-treated.
