In the wake of the sexual harassment allegations coming from Hollywood and beyond, Victoria creator Daisy Goodwin claimed that she was groped by a government official during a visit to 10 Downing Street.

The writer and executive producer of the ITV show told the Radio Times that the man put his hand on her breast after a business meeting. The incident was said to have happened between 2010 and 2016 when David Cameron was Prime Minister.

Goodwin said that although she felt "cross" at the time, she began to reconsider her reaction following the multitude of sexual abuse stories coming out.

"Now in the light of all the really shocking stories that have come out about abusive behaviour by men in power from Hollywood to Westminster, I wonder if my 'keep calm and carry on' philosophy, inherited from my parents, was correct. The answer is, I am not sure," she explained.

But Goodwin doesn't want to be drawn on the matter any more because she doesn't want the incident to define her.

"I decided that I wasn't going to say any more because I don't want to be defined by it," Goodwin told Digital Spy.

What she would be willing to talk about in relation to her experience was the aspect of Victoria she loves the most – how "women are in positions of power".

"One of the things I like about Victoria is that women are in positions of power, and it's one of the things that I like about the show," she explained.

"Women are in charge, and one of my favourite lines in the whole Christmas episode is, 'I don't need a man to tell me what's right'.

"I think I'm writing a series where women aren't victims. It wasn't a conscious decision, as I look at it more and more that the women determine their own destiny."

And on the much-anticipated Victoria Christmas special, Goodwin added: "There will be tears and joy.

"Tears and sadness – in the spirit of Christmas. I think people will leave smiling and will finish the episode feeling happier."

The Victoria Christmas special airs on Christmas Day (December 25) on ITV.
