This video is not an Israeli advertisement to 'recruit Ukrainian soldiers'

Is the Israeli army trying to recruit Ukrainian soldiers into its ranks? This is what some pro-Russian accounts are suggesting by sharing a video they say is an Israeli advertisement, in which a young Ukrainian soldier talks about his decision to join the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). However, the original video actually shows an Israeli soldier, and the Ukrainian voice has been added digitally.

If you only have a minute

  • What appears to be an Israeli advertisement encouraging Ukrainian soldiers to join the Israeli army has been shared online since November 1.

  • It shows a young man who introduces himself as a former Ukrainian soldier now fighting with the IDF. Speaking in Ukrainian, he explains the advantages of his choice.

  • But this voice was added after the fact. The original video was published on the Israeli army's TikTok account at the beginning of October, and in it, the soldier presents, in Hebrew, the numbers of three hotlines dedicated to finding information on missing persons or providing psychological support.

The fact-check, in detail

Is Israel really posting advertisements encouraging Ukrainian soldiers to join the IDF? That's what this post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on November 1 claims. The post was viewed more than 280,000 times.

In the video, we can see a soldier wearing an Israeli uniform. Subtitles in English appear on the screen as he explains in Ukrainian: "Recently I came back from the front [...] and I ran across an ad about joining the IDF. [...] I served as a sergeant in the artillery. Here I became a private, but I earn 3 times more."
