Rejoice, fans of everyone's third (maybe fourth) favourite swords and sandals TV drama! Vikings is coming back for a fifth season, and History has provided us with both a new trailer and a release date.

First of all, let's get the air date out of the way: Vikings returns for its fifth run in the US on November 29, with a bumper two-hour premiere.

And what can expect in this upcoming season? Well...

It looks like all out civil war as Ivar the Boneless and Queen Lagertha of Kattegat are set on expanding their power.

Meanwhile, we also get glimpses of Floki, Bjorn, desert adventures, stormy seas, an army of bats and a volcano erupting.

Joining the show for season five is The Tudors actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Bishop Heahmund, a role that is said to be huge and game-changing.

Rhys Meyers previously worked with Viking creator Michael Hirst on The Tudors and Elizabeth, which makes his casting even more exciting.

The fifth season of Vikings is set to be a massive twenty episodes long, so fans of a certain HBO show who are disappointed we're only getting seven instalments this year might want to give it a go to help with their withdrawal symptoms.

Vikings airs on History in the United States, while Amazon Prime Video streams the show in the United Kingdom.
