WEEKLY ROUND-UP: Sports happenings in Singapore (25-31 July)

SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (25 to 31 July):

Albirex blow SPL title race open with win over Sailors

Albirex Niigata (Singapore) breathed life into the Singapore Premier League (SPL) title race with a 4-2 victory over league leaders Lion City Sailors at the Jurong East Stadium on Friday (29 July).

Goals from Kodai Tanaka (23rd and 38th minutes), Kan Kobayashi (56th) and Tadanari Lee (84th) lifted the hosts to within two points from the slumping Sailors with a game in hand. The Sailors, who have won just once from their previous four matches, replied through M. Anumanthan (21st) and Kim Shin-wook (75th).

On Saturday, Hougang United leapfrogged over Tampines Rovers into fourth spot after a 4-2 win over the Stags at Our Tampines Hub. Kristijan Krajcek (29th, 87th), Kaishu Yamazaki (58th) and Shawal Anuar (79th) scored for the Cheetahs, while Boris Kopitovic (39th, 56th) replied for the hosts.

Tampines also fell below the surging Geylang International, who thrashed third-placed Tanjong Pagar United 5-0 for their fifth win in six matches and move to fifth spot in the league. Vincent Bezecourt (2nd, 56th), Takahiro Tezuka (22nd), Sime Zuzul (24th) and Rio Sakuma (87th) scored for the Eagles.

On Sunday, Balestier Khalsa snapped their four-match winless streak with a 2-0 win over cellar-dwellers Young Lions, courtesy of goals from Shuhei Hoshino (44th) and Kuraba Kondo (76th).

Silat athletes clinch 4 golds at World Championships

Singapore's silat athletes clinched four gold, five silver and eight bronze medals at the World Pencak Silat Championships in Melaka, which ended on Sunday (31 July).

Sheik Farhan Sheik Alau'ddin (Tanding Class J, 90-95kg) and Aniq 'Asri Yazid (Tanding Class B, 50-55kg) earn the golds on the final day of the championships, adding to the two golds won in the artistic category - from Iqbal Abdul Rahman in the male artistic singles, as well as Amirah Sahrin, Iffah Batrisyia Noh, and Nur Ashikin Zulkifli in the female artistic trio.

Singapore's best performance at the world meet was in 2018 when, on home soil, its athletes claimed seven golds, six silvers and seven bronzes.

GetActive! Singapore kicks off with Olympic Day Walk

The seventh edition of GetActive! Singapore (GASG) kicked off on Saturday (30 July) with the Olympic Day Walk at the Singapore Sports Hub's OCBC Square, with a full swing of in-person mass participation sports events to celebrate National Day.

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong flagged off the Olympic Day Walk, as over 2,400 participants enjoyed a 3km walk around the Sports Hub and the Kallang Alive precinct.

GASG events and programmes will take place until 7 August at the Sports Hub, ActiveSG sport centres and selected heartland spaces.

Luo Yiwei becomes double national champion with road race win

A total of 221 participants took part across 12 categories in the OCBC Cycle National Championship (Road Race) at Tanah Merah Coast Road on Thursday (28 July). The races consisted of 10.55-kilometre laps around Changi Coast Road, which connects to Aviation Park Road and Tanah Merah Coast Road.

National cyclist and SEA Games medallist Luo Yiwei, who was crowned the national champion in the Individual Time Trial race two weeks ago, became double national champion as she clinched the Women’s Open title in 2hr 6min 7sec.

In the Men's Open, Francois Balland of Allied World Racing won in 2:58:54, while Singapore's Yeo Boon Kiak took the national title in finishing second.

Sports Hub's National Day Fiesta activities

The Singapore Sports Hub is bringing back its National Day Fiesta to celebrate the city-state’s birthday. Here are the sporting activities for the first in-person Fiesta since 2019:

  • Family-friendly activities: Try your hand at the array of fun-filled carnival activities for all ages, such as face painting and airbrush DIY tattoo booths, game stalls featuring old-school games such as pick-up sticks, as well as snack giveaways including popcorn, candy floss and potong ice cream.

  • Workout Lah!: This cardio-fusion dance workout is choreographed to beloved National Day tunes.

  • Amazing Sport Heritage 5+7 Challenge: Participants will have to crack clues and solve mysteries along Sports Hub’s three Sports, Arts and Heritage trails to unlock interesting stories from the past. Win a copy of “The Dream Lives On”, a hardcover book containing a piece of our wonderful heritage worth $20. Participants will have to register online prior to the event.

  • Live NDP telecast and picnic: The National Day Parade (NDP) will be broadcast live at the OCBC Square and Stadium Roar. Bring your own picnic mats, snacks, and best singing voices to belt out your all-time favourite National Day songs. End the night by catching the Sports Hub's own live fireworks display by Stadium Riverside Walk.

  • National Day Family Aquatic Challenge: Held at OCBC Aquatic Centre on 10 August, participants can get avtaste of diving or artistic swimming under the professional guidance of experienced coaches. Registration starts at $10 for 2, and $20 for families of 3 to 5 persons.

Soh, Jeevaneesh to attempt record again at Pocari Sweat Run

National track-and-field athletes Soh Rui Yong and Jeevaneesh Soundararajah will be attempting to set the 2.4km national-best time again at this year's Pocari Sweat Run on 20 August at Kallang Practice Track.

Two-time SEA Games marathon gold medallist Soh is aiming to break the 6min50sec barrier, while Jeevanesh is also targeting to defend his national-best time of 6:52.97 at the event. Also taking part in the female 2.4km challenge is Goh Chui Ling, who recently became the women's 1,500m national record-holder.

The three national athletes will be racing in the elite categories on 20 August evening, with prizes value at over $9,000. All runners who register for the on-ground race on 20 and 21 August will not only receive their official 2.4km timing by Singapore Athletics, but also qualify for the Singaporean Male Under 7-minute challenge and Singaporean Female Under 8-minute challenge.

Two support races added to F1 Singapore Grand Prix

Two support races - the W Series and the TSS The Super Series - have been added to the 2022 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix, which will be held from 30 September to 2 October.

The W Series is an all-female single-seater racing championship, and Singapore will host its first race in Asia. The Marina Bay Street Circuit will be the seventh round of the 2022 season, which is led by reigning double champion Jamie Chadwick of Jenner Racing.

Meanwhile, TSS The Super Series is the biggest domestic racing series in Thailand, featuring a mix of GT3/GTM and GTC supercars. Singapore will host two invitational races, which features 27 drivers from all over the world.

F1 fans can also catch their favourite drivers in a special F1 meet-and-greet session at the Zone 1 Wharf Stage on 1 October.

International Series Singapore to be held from 11 to 14 August

The inaugural US$1.5 million International Series Singapore golf tournament will be held at Tanah Merah Country Club's Tampines Course from 11 to 14 August. This is the first Asian Tour event to be held in Singapore this season.

Six out of 10 Tour winners this season will play in the tournament including Order of Merit leader Sihwan Kim of the United States. Singapore Open winner Sadom Kaewkanjana will also be taking part, as will his Thai compatriot Jazz Janewattananond, Asian Tour's No.1 golfer in 2019.

There will also be 11 Singapore professionals, led by five-time Tour winner Mardan Mamat, and four amateurs flying the flag for the host nation.

The Asian Tour last visited Tanah Merah in January this year, when Korean Kim Joo-hyung won The Singapore International, in the penultimate event of the 2020-2022 season.

ASEAN Para Games to be streamed on TheHomeGround Asia

Inclusive digital news platform TheHomeGround Asia will be streaming all 14 sports of the ongoing ASEAN Para Games, as well as providing daily updates on the Games, which is held from 30 July to 6 August in Solo, Indonesia.

The Singapore contingent consists of 37 para-athletes will be competing across nine sports at the Games.
