Recently Stephen King revealed he wasn't consulted at all on the new adaptation of his seminal novel IT.

Fortunately he's seen it and likes it.

I can die now. Goodbye. I'm dead. 🎈

Now director Andy Muschetti has explained to Collider why King wasn't involved in the film.

"I'm very happy making an adaptation, my interpretation of the story, and I would be thrilled to meet Stephen King," he said, talking on set while the film was being shot.

"But there comes a time in the process where you start feeling good with your interpretation of it, and your contribution to the story, and it doesn't feel like I want to discuss my ideas with him, you know?

"I don't know. It feels like something that I would be embarrassed to tell him, you know? 'Your words and your moments don't work,' right?"

Among the changes made to the book, Muschetti's version of the story is split into two halves, the first of which will just feature the kids. He's also said that any involvement of the giant magic turtle from the book will be toned down, saying:

"I was never too crazy about the mythology, but it is mentioned, and the turtle appears, as a Lego. It's a Lego turtle. It's a presence that's there in the key moments of the story. Especially when – there's a moment where they're all together – well, you'll see in the movie. I won't spoil you."

He's also chosen not to include the weird orgy. Which is something of a relief.

IT opens on September 8.
