Equipment issue at Muskrat Falls caused widespread power outage in Newfoundland

Tens of thousands of people in Newfoundland were without power this afternoon. The problem has since been resolved for most of the people impacted.
A post from NL Hydro on X says there was an equipment issue in the Muskrat Falls plant.
"This caused a sudden imbalance on the system, this is short lived and customers are being restored now," the post reads.
In another post, NL Hydro said "these kind of outages, while rare, do happen on occasion to protect system equipment from further damage and allow a rebalance."
As well, NL Hydro shared a link on social media describing it as an "under frequency event."
"If an electricity system trip or issue results in a sudden loss of generation, we automatically drop predetermined blocks of customers to quickly balance the system," the NL Hydro website said. "It's designed to protect the system from further damage or a widespread outage."
