KiwiRail acting group chief executive David Gordon told Yahoo News Australia the train in question was a freight train.

"These types of events are deeply traumatic for those involved, and our thoughts are with all those affected," Mr Gordon said in a statement.

"In line with our standard practice, our locomotive engineer has been put on leave and will be offered counselling and any other support needed from KiwiRail, and KiwiRail will conduct its own investigation of the incident.

"The line has now re-opened."

At this stage it is unclear if the woman and child are related.

Yahoo News Australia has contacted NZ Police for comment.
