Woman's life-changing avocado hack

Keeping your avocado fresh for as long as possible is a trick people around the world are always trying to master.

And one Facebook user might just have the answer to all out problems as she reveals how good old coconut oil can help to keep your avo fresh for days.

In a post she shared into a Facebook group, brushing melted coconut oil over the open half of your avocado will help to form a protective layer that makes it take longer to brown.

Avocados contain an Enzyme called polyphenol oxidase, which turns brown when it comes into contact with the oxygen in the air.

But the coconut oil helps to slow down that process by reducing the contact with oxygen.

For the same reason, wrapping up your avocado in a plastic wrap or beeswax wrap can also help slow down the oxidisation. Should you not have any coconut oil to hand!

But if you’re planning to get your green stuff fix soon, you might want to make sure you wash it before you spread it on your sour dough.

The FDA (the food and drug administration in the US) has issued a warning to avo fans that they need to be giving the fruit a good scrub before smashing because they’ve found bacteria such as salmonella and listeria on the avocado skins they’ve tested over the last 18 months.

We know you peel the avocados first, but according to the food safety experts, merely peeling the skin won’t protect you completely.

That’s because when you slice through the avocado the knife could carry bacteria from the skin into the avocado flesh, which you then whack in your mouth. Gross!
