The one thing you don't want to happen mid-proposal

When Matthew Picca decided to propose to his partner of six years, he never expected to do it shirtless and smelling of fish.

The 25-year-old, from the United States, was on holiday with girlfriend Kayla and her family when he decided to pop the question at a waterfront bar.

As he got down on one knee however, disaster struck and he dropped the ring into the water below.

“I covered my face and began to cry because I knew my boyfriend was devastated,” Kayla said in an interview with Huffington Post.

“Matthew did not even get to say anything to me before the ring fell into the ocean.”

With a heavy heart, Matthew began searching for the ring and was soon joined by Kayla, her family and a host of sympathetic locals.

Armed with 10 flashlights and five pairs of goggles, the rescue team searched underwater, wading in waist-deep water and sifting through the sand.

They finally struck gold after nearly two hours.

To the delight of the crowd, Matthew then dropped to one knee and asked Kayla for her hand in marriage a second time.

Fortunately, after all the drama, she said yes.
