'Overdose of alcohol': Australian woman dies in Bali after drinking 27 glasses of vodka

Bali police are investigating the death of an Australian woman at a luxury seaside villa in Bali, suspecting she had consumed more than a whole bottle of vodka in a Sunday drinking session.

The Queensland woman, identified in Indonesia as Summa Jean Simmonds, 38, was with two other women from Mossman in Queensland when she died.

One of the other women is reported to be Ms Simmonds' sister.

The women were drinking at Peppers resort in the popular tourist town of Seminyak on Sunday evening.

According to police the woman consumed a "whole bottle of vodka" - or around 21 drinks - before having six more shots later in the evening.

Police images of the villa show two empty bottles of Absolute Vodka on a table along with a third, unnamed vodka as well as vodka mixes, News Corp reports.

There was no sign the women had been drinking the local spirit arak, which has been linked to tourist deaths and serious injuries in the past.

Later that night, the 38-year-old went to her villa to get money so she and her friends - believed to be 20 and 46 - could go out.

But she began vomiting, Badung Police Precinct Chief, Budi Setiawan said on Monday.

"The victim fainted, was unconscious, and her pulse became weak. The victim's face and lips turned blue," he added.

Her friends initially gave her CPR but after there was no change, they called the hotel's reception for a doctor.

The doctor arrived just after midnight to find her lying on the pool deck. She was pronounced dead just minutes later, Superintendent Budi said.

He said they suspect that she died from drinking too much alcohol.

North Kuta police chief Pius Pebri Aceng Loda told News Corp although investigations were ongoing, there were no signs of violence and it was thought Ms Simmonds died from alcohol poisoning.

“We allege that she died from an overdose of alcohol beverages. We did not find any sign of violence but the investigation is ongoing," Mr Loda said.

“We are still waiting for an autopsy. We need to do an autopsy to find the cause of death.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said they were providing consular assistance to the woman's family.

Ms Simmonds was travelling on a passport issued last month.
