1 Dead After Falling from Stands During Ohio State Graduation Ceremony

Counseling and support resources are available for those affected by the incident, a university spokesperson tells PEOPLE

An individual is dead after they fell from the stands during a graduation ceremony at the Ohio State University on May 5.

"Tragically, an individual fell from the stands and is deceased," OSU spokesperson Ben Johnson told PEOPLE in a statement. "We have no additional details to share at this time."

Additional details about the fall are not yet known and the Franklin County Coroner's Office told PEOPLE that it was still "working on gaining positive identification."

Per the Columbus Dispatch, a call was sent to first responders around 12:30 p.m. local time: "I need medics and some officers at gate 30 (of Ohio Stadium)... had one fall off the stadium."

Social entrepreneur and the Ohio State alumnus Chris Pan was the speaker at the ceremony, which was held at the football stadium, where there's a capacity of over 100,000 people, according to Today. It wasn't immediately clear how many people were in attendance.

The Columbus Dispatch reported students leaving the ceremony walked by the area where the area was still closed off by yellow crime scene tape.

Per the newspaper, the ceremony continued without interruption and speakers did not mention the incident.

In the school's statement, a spokesperson said that counseling and other support resources will be made available "for anyone affected by yesterday’s incident."
