2024 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Drama Series

Weekly Commentary (Updated May 2, 2024): Netflix is vying for multiple nominations in the drama series category, with the final season of “The Crown” and “3 Body Problem,” the latter of which is a new series by the creators of “Game of Thrones.” Both shows could have a passionate fanbase that pulls them into the lineup.

Prime Video is aggressively campaigning for “Fallout,” based on the popular video game series, aiming for numerous nominations, including outstanding drama series. Historically, Amazon has only garnered one drama series nomination for the second season of “The Boys” in 2021. This year, Amazon hopes to secure a second nomination and potentially a third with Donald Glover’s thrilling “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

AMC’s six-episode spinoff “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” is hoping for overdue Emmy love, despite the change in its category planned classification. It was created by Scott M. Gimple, Danai Gurira, and Andrew Lincoln and aimed at the outstanding limited or anthology series category. However, due to its recurring characters, it must compete in the drama series category instead, where it faces immense competition. Although the TV Academy has historically overlooked the show, AMC is optimistic about its chances for recognition this year.

About the Primetime Emmy Awards

The Primetime Emmy Awards, commonly known as the Emmys, are awarded by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). Established in 1949, these celebrate outstanding achievements in American primetime television. The Emmys are categorized into three divisions: the Primetime Emmy Awards for performance and production excellence, the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards recognizing achievements in artistry and craftsmanship, and the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards, which honor significant engineering and technological advancements. The eligibility period typically extends from June 1 to May 31 each year. The Television Academy, which hosts the Emmys, consists of over 20,000 members across 30 professional peer groups, including performers, directors, producers, art directors, artisans and executives.
