Single male giraffe 'looking for love'

Shaba the giraffe has arrived in Canberra as an eligible bachelor for young female Mzungu at the National Zoo and Aquarium.

The three-year-old giraffe made the long journey up the Clyde Mountain from Mogo on the New South Wales south coast in a specially fitted-out truck to join a regional breeding program.

Shaba kept looking about and occasionally dodged overhanging trees, but for his keepers it was a tense few hours.

Trent Russell from the National Zoo and Aquarium said Shaba arrived safe and well.

"The bigger the animal the less control we have over situation if that makes sense," he said.

"So it is... a little nerve-racking."

Keepers are hopeful Shaba and Mzungu will help boost giraffe numbers.
