Woman captures moment two pilots are killed after plane crashes into apartment complex

Two people have been killed in a plane crash that was captured on social media app Snapchat by an unsuspecting neighbour.

The Akron Fire Department has confirmed a Hawker H25 small jet came down in Akron, Ohio, on Tuesday around 3pm local time and crashed into an apartment complex.

The small plane is believed to have clipped electrical and telephone wires before crashing and bursting into flames.

Authorities are reporting no one on the ground was injured but that due to the severity of the fire they are unable to confirm the number of people on board the jet, which can carry as many as 10 people.

"Obviously, the situation could have been worse, granted, if anybody was home," State Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Haymaker said.

Neighbour Paige McVeigh shared the video she was recording on Snapchat the moment the plane crashed into the building.

She says the apartment complex is made up of three buildings, the middle building being the one that was struck by the plane, killing the pilot and co-pilot.

Emergency services arrived to flames and thick, black smoke on the scene.

Witnesses have described to US media the what they believed sounded like a car hitting a telephone pole as the plane clipped another apartment building before it went down.

"I heard a loud plane that sounded super low to the ground," local resident Hannah McCune told NBC News.

"Then I heard a big boom and looked up and saw a bunch of smoke and flames."

Meteorologist Quincy Vagell has suggested weather and flying conditions were "poor, with low visibility and fog."

"Outside of a controlled runway landing, getting a plane down safely in an emergency would have been a very tough task," he said.
