Teen bridge jumper dies after mate lands on top of him

A teenager has drowned after jumping from a bridge into Raglan estuary in Waikato in New Zealand's North Island.

The 16-year-old boy was with a group of friends when he leaped off the bridge, a popular summer pastime, on Monday afternoon.

Another person jumped off afterwards and landed on top of him.

He disappeared underwater and was not found for 10 minutes.

Paramedics along with an air ambulance were dispatched to try and revive the young man but they were unsuccessful.

Two of the boy’s schoolmates, Reiki Ruawai and Jahvik Leng-Ware, told media the teen was one of the “nicest boys” they knew and was “always keen for a laugh”.

Police are investigating.
