Four days after tearing his left Achilles, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is opening up about how he’s processed the season-ending injury.

“It hit me like a ton of bricks for 24 hours,” Rodgers, 39, said during an interview on The Pat McAfee Show on Friday. “There were moments of just sobbing.”

“There was a lot of anger, like why? Why is this happening?” Rodgers added.

Rodgers said he immediately knew he tore his Achilles tendon while trying to evade a tackle during the first drive of the Jets’ season opener Monday night against the Buffalo Bills. The injury came four plays into Rodgers’ highly anticipated debut in New York, where he was traded this offseason after 17 years with the Green Bay Packers.

Rodgers quickly fell to the ground after trying to get up following the tackle by Bills’ defensive end Leonard Floyd.

“Before I even had an MRI, I knew what happened. I knew I had torn my Achilles,” Rodgers said. “I knew right away this was not a good situation.”

The four-time NFL MVP is still bedridden after getting surgery Tuesday. “I am not able to put any weight on it yet,” said Rodgers, who called into McAfee’s show from his recovery room, still wearing a hospital bracelet.

Rodgers teased that he is aiming to be back on the field by the time the NFL Playoffs begin in January, though that timeline is far sooner than the typical recovery period for an Achilles injury. “Anything’s possible,” Rodgers said, before adding that “it doesn’t do anything to make prognostications honestly, other than to help my own mental state.”

The indication that Rodgers is hoping he can be back on the field ahead of expectations drew some teasing from The Pat McAfee Show’s panel, including from Rodgers’ former Packers teammate A.J. Hawk.

“What are you trying to say? You're trying to be the fastest guy ever to come back from an Achilles injury?” Hawk asked.

“We’ll see what happens,” Rodgers replied, before adding, “I think as Kevin Garnett said, anything’s possible.”

Rodgers said “I'm going to try and push this thing as much as it'll allow me to.”

“I’ve got to see where I'm at after a week or two weeks, in a month, and two months, and then we'll see what the conversation is from there,” Rodgers said.
