Amy Robach Says She Learns About Couples’ Communication Watching Reality Dating Shows

"There is some real realness to those conversations," said Robach during the latest episode of the 'Amy & T.J.' podcast, where she and T.J. Holmes were joined by 'The Bachelor' alum Matt James

Amy Robach is opening up about what reality TV dating shows have taught her.

During the most recent episode of the Amy & T.J. podcast, which was released Thursday, Robach, 50, and her boyfriend T.J. Holmes were joined by Bachelor alum Matt James to discuss the reality dating show franchise and his relationship with his former costar Rachael Kirkconnell.

Robach noted that she used to watch the show and its various spin-offs with her daughters and found it to be "family viewing because you're learning about relationships and how people interact with each other."

"See, I don't think it gets credit for what you just said," responded Holmes, 46. "People often say it's just reality. It's trash TV or this isn't how you're supposed to find love. How can any of this work out? But I think you hit on something no matter what. I think we're all still, we want love to work.”

“We are rooting,” he continued. "We have this hope in us no matter what, and then we get cynical later. But I think at its origin, we are rooting for people and we're rooting for love.”

“Right. I totally agree,” Robach replied. “And I find that I learn about communication when I'm watching these shows. Maybe that sounds silly, but I do think people's emotions when I'm watching it, it's legit. It's real. It mirrors life.”

“This is how you learn to communicate in a relationship,” Holmes commented.

“No, but I'm watching –,” Robach added, before Holmes interrupted, “I see why we're having problems."

Her co-host then added that he was "kidding" as Robach continued, "But how many times do you actually get to watch other couples communicate? I mean, you really get to watch it. And I know cameras are there and it is in part fantasy, but there is some real realness to those conversations that I found to be and interesting and insightful sometimes.”

In a previous episode of their podcast, Robach and Holmes opened up about dealing with miscommunication in their relationship in an emotionally raw recording.

The couple and ex-Good Morning America co-anchors got into heated discussion over their communication issues as Robach confronted Holmes for being “moody" and not opening up to her when he has what he admitted are his "really bad days."

"I'd love for you to do is to confide in me, to lean on me, to share with me so that we're a part of the solution together," noted Robach, who revealed that the issue has led to many arguments between them.

Going on to admit that his girlfriend "won't like" his answer about why he doesn't let her in on his bad days, Holmes explained, “Because when things get that kind of bad and I'm that kind of focused or that kind of quiet, the last thing in that moment I want to do is to tell you what I need. That is how I feel, and that is the truth. Not that I think it's your responsibility. Well, you should just know.”
