Ayo Edebiri Addresses JLo Podcast Backlash — and Instagram Is Loving It

After using her Saturday Night Live hosting stint to obliquely reference previous shade she’d thrown at Jennifer Lopez, The Bear actress Ayo Edebiri has addressed the controversy more directly via Instagram.

Edebiri’s newest comment came via SNL cast member Bowen Yang’s Instagram page, where he posted a segment from his and Matt Rogers’ Las Culturistas podcast. In the clip, SNL vet Tina Fey uses the recurring segment “I Don’t Think So, Honey!” — in which Yang, Rogers or their guests rant about a cultural pet peeve for one minute — to tell Yang that he’s officially too famous to be giving his actual opinions about movies on his podcast.

“Are you having a problem with Saltburn? Quiet luxury. Keep it to yourself,” Fey urged. “Because what are you going to do when [Saltburn director] Emerald Fennell calls you about her next project where you play Carey Mulligan’s coworker in the bridal section of Harrods, and then Act 3 takes a sexually violent turn, and you have to pretend to be surprised by that turn?… Learn from my mistakes, learn from Ayo. Podcasts are forever. Authenticity is dangerous and expensive.”

“LEARN FROM ME,” Edebiri agreed in a comment underneath the clip, which was met with everything from fire emojis to comments like “im screaming” in replies from other users.

Fey and Edebiri are referencing Edebiri’s 2020 appearance on Laci Mosley’s Scam Goddess podcast, in which she said Lopez’s career is “one long scam.” (“I think she thinks that she’s still good, even though she’s not singing for most of these songs,” Edebiri said at the time.)

In an awkward twist, Lopez served as SNL‘s musical guest when Edebiri hosted on Feb. 3. During that episode, Edebiri appeared to hint at her previous podcast comments during the sketch “Why’d You Say It,” in which game show contestants were forced to address rude remarks they’d made on social media.

“OK, OK, we get it!” Edebiri’s character eventually said. “It’s wrong to leave mean comments, or post comments just for clout, or run your mouth on a podcast and you don’t consider the impact ’cause you’re 24 and stupid! But I think I speak for everyone when I say, from now on, we’re gonna be a lot more thoughtful about what we post online!” (Watch the full sketch above.)
