Most women wear makeup to boost their confidence or make themselves feel more beautiful before work or a night out
But an anonymous app has uncovered the heart-wrenching truth behind why some women need to cover up.
Alleged victims of domestic violence have taken to Whisper, a message-sharing app which allows users to anonymously post pictures and captions, to explain how makeup hides their the cuts and bruises they have suffered.
One post shows a woman applying blush, outlining it's applied to "hide the bruises". Another shocking image reveals a victim's failed attempt to leave her abusive partner: "I tried to leave again... won't be doing that again anytime soon."
Another image discloses the disturbing conversation one woman overheard between a teen couple shopping for makeup to cover the young girl's injuries. Another girl posts about being forced to use makeup to "cover up her nasty bruises".
These are some of the shocking and incredibly confronting images.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month starts this week in the US, while in Australia we have our own local campaign to stop violence against women in November on White Ribbon Day.
