After Platt stepped down from the titular role in the Tony-winning musical, Galvin was announced as his replacement in November 2017. From there, they developed a close friendship that eventually turned into a romance.

"We were friends for five years, and right before the pandemic we finally decided to really give it a shot. We kind of skated around it for a long time," Platt told Kelly Clarkson in 2021 of how their relationship developed.

In a previous interview, Platt told PEOPLE what he admires most about his fiancé: "His ideals are very pure and his standards and principles are very pure and he expects a lot of people and he holds people to a high standard, and doesn't want to fake or lie or pretend or phone in emotional connection or intelligence or understanding."
