Original Bergerac star John Nettles is set to be a headline speaker at a Jersey literary event in September.

The Jersey Festival of Words will return for its ninth year "promoting a love of the written and spoken word across our community in a variety of styles and settings".

Organisers said Mr Nettles, who also is a historian and author, would present his latest Occupation-related project at the event.

Other visiting speakers include Jackie Kay, Michael Rosen and former Children's Laureate Chris Riddell.

Mr Nettles' book 'Gentle Violence' is a new edition of the diaries of Baron Hans Max von Aufsess - the commanding officer of the civil administration of the Channel Islands.

The event said it was the "first unabridged and unexpurgated version of the baron’s journal" and documented his "innermost thoughts" including when food began to run out after D-Day.

Mr Nettles will be on stage at the Freedom Centre, sponsored by Oakglen Wealth.

William Lamond, investment director at Oakglen Wealth, said Mr Nettles' "profound storytelling and distinguished career promise to captivate and inspire everyone, making this event truly unforgettable".

The event will take place from Friday 20 September until Sunday 29 September across venues including Jersey Library, the Arts Centre, Millennium Park and the Jersey Lido.
